The direst potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been mapped by scientists, encompassing a scorching 4C rise in temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea levels. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and power requirements.

Possible Outcomes, Not Guarantees

These impacts, some of which are connected to critical climate thresholds, are considered as unlikely but credible. The scientists stated that these scenarios plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The climate extremes we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," stated the lead researcher who oversaw the study. "Britain has been formulating policy in the absence of the methods to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
