This initiative, Proposition 50, was approved by the electorate Tuesday night, marking a clear win for Democrats. The plan grants on a temporary basis the authority to delineate electoral boundaries to the California legislature, allowing it to approve maps that will help the Democratic party gain five congressional seats in the House of Representatives.

Countermeasure to Gerrymandering in Texas

The plan is a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, where Republicans, at the US president’s behest, have carved out a number of new safe Republican districts.
