Marco Rubio stated on Friday that every trade discussion with Canadian authorities had been halted after Canada's government shared via social platforms a 5-minute excerpt of a 1987 speech by President Reagan denouncing trade barriers that seemed to spark Donald Trump's anger.
The leader of Ontario, Premier Ford, whose administration ran the Reagan commercial in American markets this week, posted on social media that the both countries are "more powerful united", while Trump posted his own string of online messages promoting the supposed benefits of import taxes.
"Canada and the United States are friends, neighbours and friends. President Reagan understood that we are better united," the Ontario premier stated alongside the Reagan clip. "God bless Canada and God bless the United States of America."
The deterioration in relationships apparently stems from a one-minute TV commercial featuring President Reagan's radio address stating that "tariffs harm all US workers"
The President reacted on his social platform without proof that Canada had somehow run a "fraudulent" and "fake" advertisement, and announced that "every trade discussion with our northern neighbor are hereby terminated"
Rubio, the top diplomat, on the weekend told reporters that the Ontario premier had broadcast advertisements in the United States which "used President Reagan's statements out of context," adding that the Reagan Foundation had questioned the campaign, too
The Reagan Foundation stated Thursday that the Ontario government's advertisement "misrepresents" the President's speech, without explaining how
Ford's office answered by reposting the extended, 5-minute segment, and said that the commercial uses "an unedited excerpt from a Reagan speeches, which is accessible through public domain"
Congress members on the House ways and means committee stepped forward to support the Canadian commercial
"This is the ad that prompted the President to terminate all trade talks with Canada," the committee shared on social media
The dispute comes as each country confront critical deadlines in the next few weeks
Chris Sands, the head of the Center for Canadian Studies at the university, suggested the failure in talks merely formalizes a dead-end process
"Should we halt trade talks? Yes, you can end discussions about metals, aluminium, power, everything," he stated
Sands noted the irony of Trump referencing Reagan while undoing his trade legacy
"The former president supported the nation – he loved free trade. Maybe Donald Trump thinks that, but it's not what he's selling now"
Washington implemented 25 percent duties on goods from Canada this spring, leading to countermeasures from Canada before Trump raised duties to 35 percent in the summer
